How much does a gallon of diesel weigh?
With the example density of 840 kg/m³, one US gallon of diesel weighs about 7.010 pounds. That is a starting assumption, not a fixed conversion factor for diesel. The product’s density and the gallon definition determine the answer.
The default comes from Shell’s ULS Diesel safety data sheet, section 9. It lists 820–860 kg/m³ at 15°C (59°F). This calculator uses 840 as the arithmetic midpoint and also shows the weights produced by both ends of that range. The document identifies a particular U.S. product; it does not establish a universal range for every diesel blend.
The diesel gallons-to-pounds formula
The first factor converts US gallons to liters. Dividing density by 1,000 turns kg/m³ into kg/L. Multiplying volume by that density gives kilograms; dividing by 0.45359237 converts kilograms to pounds.
For 100 US gallons at 840 kg/m³, the volume is 378.5411784 liters and the fuel mass is 317.974589856 kilograms. The result is about 701.014 pounds. Using 820 or 860 kg/m³ for those same gallons gives about 684.323 or 717.705 pounds.

These calculated examples use US liquid gallons and the cited product density at 15°C. They count the fuel alone. The range columns describe the effect of the specified densities, not a statistical confidence interval.

Use a density for your actual fuel
Check the product specification or the physical-properties section of its safety data sheet. Keep the temperature written beside the density. A density at 15°C should be paired with a volume measured or corrected to that same basis; changing a temperature label by itself does not adjust a volume.
The custom option accepts kg/m³. For example, 0.835 kg/L is 835 kg/m³, and 0.835 g/mL is also 835 kg/m³. A dimensionless specific-gravity value is a different expression: use a supplied mass-per-volume density instead of entering that number directly.
No automatic correction for temperature, fuel type or blend is hidden in the result. If your fuel differs from the cited product, enter an appropriate density. A custom value produces a single-density answer and removes the source range.
Converting diesel pounds back to gallons
Choose “Pounds → volume.” The calculator converts the entered pounds to kilograms, divides by density to find liters, and then converts to your selected volume unit. At a fixed weight, a higher density means fewer gallons. That is why the smaller end of the reverse volume range comes from the higher density.
If you switch direction after a valid calculation, the form uses the equivalent quantity from your result. This helps you check the reverse calculation without retyping a rounded number.
US gallons and Imperial gallons are different sizes
One Imperial gallon is 4.54609 liters, about 20.1% larger than a US liquid gallon. At the same diesel density it therefore weighs about 20.1% more. With 840 kg/m³, one Imperial gallon weighs about 8.419 pounds. Select the gallon used on your measurement or invoice; a bare “gal” label can otherwise lead to a significant error.
What this estimate includes
This is fuel-weight arithmetic. It does not add the tank, vehicle, other fluids or cargo, and it does not assess legal or mechanical load limits. Use actual measurements and the relevant equipment information when making those decisions. A nominal tank capacity is also not a measurement of the fuel currently inside it.
