Gross, tare and net belong to the same shipment
The shipment gross is everything included in the scale reading. Tare is the packaging within that same reading. Net is what remains after the packaging is removed mathematically. For a liquid shipment, this worksheet separates repeated container tare from shared packaging such as pallets and wrapping.
Liquid net = measured shipment gross − total tare
Average liquid net per container = liquid net ÷ container count
That average does not show how much is in each individual container. One may be filled more than another. Likewise, a single empty-container tare is appropriate only when the containers have that same tare or the number is a documented average for this group. If containers have different weights, determine their total tare first and divide it by the count to enter the exact group average.
Avoid subtracting the same packaging twice
Decide what each record includes before entering it. If an empty drum’s stated tare already includes its lid and fittings, do not add those items again as shared packing. Shared packing is entered once for the entire shipment, not once per container. A palletized reading and a bare-container reading have different boundaries.
If the scale was zeroed with a pallet or used a stored tare, the displayed reading may already be net. Subtracting that tare again produces the wrong answer. Use a gross record whose included items match your packaging list. This worksheet does not include truck weight, infer undocumented tare or assemble mixed-product shipments.
Use gallons and density as a separate check
Switch on the optional comparison only when you have a volume record and a matching density. The calculator multiplies the entered liquid volume per container by the container count, then converts that total to liquid mass. Adding the same tare produces an expected shipment gross for comparison.
Expected shipment gross = expected liquid mass + entered tare
Difference = measured-minus-tare net − expected liquid mass
Use the actual recorded fill, not just the container’s nominal capacity. A “55-gallon drum” description alone does not establish 55 gallons of liquid. Confirm whether the volume unit is US liquid gallons or Imperial gallons. The density unit is independent: the tool converts both to liters and kilograms internally.

Worked example: four containers on shared packing
These are illustrative numbers, not a product specification. Four containers each have a tare of 25 lb. Their shared packing weighs 40 lb. A measured shipment gross of 1,780 lb therefore gives 140 lb total tare and 1,640 lb of liquid net, averaging 410 lb per container.
A separate record states 50 US gallons in each container and a matching density of 8 lb per US gallon. That is 200 US gallons, or 1,600 lb of expected liquid. With the entered tare, the expected shipment gross would be 1,740 lb. The measured-minus-tare liquid net is 40 lb higher, a 2.5% difference relative to the expected 1,600 lb.
Dividing the 1,640 lb net by the same 8 lb/US gal gives an inferred 205 US gallons. This is another way to express the weight record; it is not an independent measurement that proves there were 205 gallons in the containers. Check the recorded fill, tare and density before drawing a conclusion.
Interpret the difference without inventing a tolerance
The comparison reports the arithmetic difference. It does not choose a permissible fill error or infer product loss. If the expected liquid weight is zero, the tool still shows the absolute difference but leaves the percentage undefined. A tare larger than the measured gross is rejected so that a negative liquid weight is never presented as a valid result.
